About Me
Hi, I’m Susan and I’m glad you found me.
I’m a writer and story coach.
My favorite place is between the pages of a book or curled up watching a classic film or K-drama. I seek out stories wherever I can and when I’m not doing that, I’m researching how they work and the latest neuroscience on how our brains process story. I suppose you could call me a story addict.
As a writer, I understand the sheer terror of facing that blank screen while crunching a deadline only to be left scrounging for the right words to make your point. But, after three decades doing this, I know how to tell stories without all the stress and struggle. That’s what I can share with you.
10 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME
1
I’ve been obsessed by story since I was wee. It started with Trixie Belden and Scooby-Doo, but quickly grew to include classic films, books (I own over 7k of them), K-dramas, anime, and every other form of story I can find. Heck, I’ll even hit up strangers to hear their stories (which is saying a lot for an introvert).
2
I teach Creative Nonfiction, Novel and Screenwriting locally and have written the Figments & Fables blog for years simply because I love sharing my passion for stories and writing.
3
My first writing job was with the Mouse…Mickey, that is. I even attended Disney University for advanced studies where you graduate with Tinker Bell sprinkling pixie dust in your hair. It took a full three weeks to get it out.
4
I’m a writer/director/producer/script doctor for documentary and corporate films and served as president of Women in Film & Video in Washington, DC. Never one to niche down, I’ve been a professional writer, speechwriter, scriptwriter, researcher, teacher, coach, and filmmaker—always focused on story no matter its form.
5
I believe stories are the core of all human experience. It’s how we process life, share experiences, inspire, motivate, educate, entertain, persuade, inform, elevate, engage, and move people to act. Stories are the powerhouse of all human communication.
6
I bring more than 30 years of experience to my coaching business. Years spent writing and studying stories—finding out what makes them work and how to write them better. I’ve studied linguistics, neuroscience, psychology, writing, filmmaking, business, and so much more. I regularly dedicate research days at the Library of Congress so I can stay up-to-date on the latest research. Plus, who can stay away from that gorgeous building?
7
I’m an introvert. Some might even call me a hermit. After 30+ years spent writing, it’s no wonder I prefer small groups and 1:1 encounters…unless you hand me a mic and ask me about story. Then you might not get me to shut up.
8
Stories matter. They can heal and connect us. They give a voice to those who can’t speak up. They give power to those who have none. They reveal weaknesses and strengths and the whole range of the human condition. Stories have power. If you can learn how to wield that power, then you’ll wield a mightier sword than any forged in fire.
9
I believe people learn more through kindness and example than harsh words and a page filled with red corrections. My coaching focuses on thorough analysis, constructive feedback, gentle nudges, and a guiding hand.
10
I’m a military brat, spouse, and aunt to two active duty military personnel. I’m a member of the Military Writers Guild and nearly fluent in acronym.
