Writers are those who write. It’s that simple. There’s no other definition of a writer required.
You don’t need published credits or awards to claim that title. You don’t need outside validation.
All you have to do is write. Consistently. Actively.
Not talk about it. Not wish it. Not plan it. But actually put your pen to paper or fingers on the keys and tap out words that make sentences that form stories in some form or fashion.
It is about action, not intention.
Skill level doesn’t determine whether you are a writer. It’s what you do that counts.
So stop worrying that you are “not a writer,” because that doesn’t matter. Just write.
If you want to get better, find a coach or teacher, or dive into the abundant writing resources out there.
You can learn how to write better. But learning won’t work if you don’t apply what you learn. You have to write.
Writing determines everything.
If you are not writing, then no, you are not a writer.
If you do write (and it doesn’t matter in what form), then claim the title and move on.
Focus on getting better. Focus on translating those ideas from your head onto the page, screen, or stage.
Do that, and you will be a writer.
